The main theme this year is ‘The Foundation of a New State’.
Once more the Greystones Archaeological and Historical Society is collaborating with the La Touche Legacy Committee in bringing this annual seminar to the local community and of course also from further afield.  Rosemary Raughter Chairperson, Greystones Archaeological & Historical Society said “Greystones Archaeological and Historical Society is delighted to be associated with the La Touche Legacy Committee once more in the organisation of the 2017 Festival of History. As the Decade of Centenaries rolls on, so does the focus of our annual conference: having previously looked at World War I and 1916, we now move on to the creation and the early years of the new Irish state” “Our speakers, who include some of our most eminent Irish historians and political commentators, are uniformly leading figures in their field. Topics range from political activity and government to the part of minorities in the new state, and specifically in the GAA, to the role of women and the writing of the Irish Revolution, while local history will be represented in Joan Kavanagh’s illustrated lecture on the emergence of Glendalough as a tourist centre.
The opportunity to host such expertise and to hear debate of this quality is hugely exciting. It will, we are confident, attract the usual impressive support, and we look forward to welcoming friends, both local and from further afield, to this year’s event”. George added that the Seminar   are delighted to welcome Anne Daly Supervalu, Greystones as sponsor.  At the end of July and throughout August September, Greystones library and Supervalu will host a weekly competition for La Touche seminar tickets.  The competition will be based around the permanent La Touche exhibition that is on display in Greystones library.
