|The Launch of the 30th La Touche Legacy Seminar and 5th Festival of History took place in the historic surroundings of Greystones Golf Club on Monday night 2nd July.
The attendance included members of the La Toucher Legacy Committee, the committee of the Greystones Archaeological and Historical Society, Wicklow County Councillors and Officials and friends of the Festival weekend.
George Jones Chairman of the La Touche Legacy Committee said “it was with a little sadness the launch was taking place without our honorary President Garech de Brun who passed away earlier this year. George said “that many of the first number of years launches took place in Luggala and all had very fond memories of many a pleasant visit to Luggala” Garech will be remembered at this year’s Seminar taking on Friday/Saturday 21st /22nd September in the Golf Club.
Once more the Festival of History is being run in association with Greystones Archaeological & Historical Society, Chairperson Rosemary Raughter commented “the Society was delighted to be involved once more in the weekend and a re very happy to see Rosemary Cullen Owens speaking to the subject of the women’s suffrage movement and the Irish votes for the women’ campaign which culminated in the 1918 Representation of the People Act. Rosemary also highlighted the proposed attendance of retired lawyer and judge Liz Goldthorpe who will speak on Averil Deverell, a Greystones resident and first women to practice at the Bar.
George Jones said the theme this year “Evolution of the Irish State-Social & Political “continue along the line being a follow on from the past four seminars when we considered WW1, 1916, the emerging nation and the creation of a new state. The other lectures by Noel Campbell, Dr Martin O ’Donoghue, Felix Larkin will touch on the Irish Parliamentary Party, the Spanish flu in Wicklow and the part played by “Dublin Opinion “in the new Irish State with David McCullagh of Prime Time RTE speaking on Eamon de Valera.
George concluded by saying he was delighted the St Kevin’s NS under the guidance of teacher David Flynn will provide the dramatic and musical opening and Minister Simon Harris will be the dinner Guest Speaker.
